What should I do before and after getting my tattoo?

Before your appointment:
-If you know where you want the tattoo, please shave the area the evening before. Keep it clean and consider using a moisturizer if the area is dry.
-Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol the night before. It makes your blood thinner and causes more bleeding, which can affect how the tattoo heals. If possible, avoid a ton of caffeine the morning of, for the same reason. But your normal morning cup'o joe should be fine.
-If you want to use numbing cream before the appointment, please give me a heads up about it, and let me know which brand it is. There might be some circumstances where I will advice against it.

After your appointment:

-Your tattoo will be wrapped in a bandage or plastic. Depending on the time, bleeding and type of tattoo, I will advice you to take it off and clean it in the evening, or leave it on until the morning after.
I advice you to clean your tattoo twice a day, more if needed. If you do something that makes you sweat, or gets the skin dirty in any way, clean it as needed. I recommend you wash it with an unscented soap of any kind, the ones appropriate for young children or sensitive skin is usually ideal. Rinse the tattoo, pat it dry with a clean towel, and add a thin layer of lotion. I recommend Bepanthen or Aquaphor. They are both available at any pharmacy in Norway.

- Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible the first two-three weeks. This can cause blisters and affect the healing. Put a light band aid or cloth over the are if your clothes don't cover it when you stay in the sun for long.

-While it heals, avoid keeping it under water for long, swimming in the ocean, saunas or tanning beds. They all increase the risk of infection and uneven healing.

When the tattoo is fully healed (2-4 weeks), start using sunblock on it as often as you can. This will keep it fresh-looking and bright for a longer time.
